Gwilym Simcock

I PREFER THE GORGEOUS FREEDOM

Originally a commission from the Norfolk and Norwich Festival for community choir The Voice Project the uplifting choral work" I Prefer the Gorgeous Freedom" effortlessly blends classical and jazz themes into a sonorous whole.

The work has been performed a number of times and was recorded by BBC Radio 3's Choir Programme.

"A phenomenal talent, Simcock is a jewel in the crown of the country's jazz scene, and it was a joy and honour to have him playing such an integral role in this year's festival". Rob Garratt, Norwich Evening News

"Melodically rich, harmonically daring, rhythmically subtle, pianist Gwilym Simcock's quartet piece, “Longing To Be”, which kicked off last night's Queen Elizabeth Hall gig was one of the most jaw-dropping performances I've heard at this year's London Jazz Festival". Peter Quinn, The Arts Desk

The project was played in The Hague with the Dario Fo Choir as featured in the following video clip>>>

I Prefer The Gorgeous Freedom

The songs are settings of poems about freedom from a diverse range of poets including one by a detainee of Guantanamo Bay, Moazzam Begg (Homeward Bound), by Aleksandr Blok (I Prefer the Gorgeous Freedom), W.B.Yeats (Innisfree based on 'The Lake Isle of Innisfree'), Emily Dickinson (No Rack : Everyone Sang) and the well known jazz standard by Billy Taylor made famous by Nina Simone I wish I knew how it would feel to be free.
